{"kind":"experiment","schemaVersion":1,"contentVersion":1,"projectId":"field-testing-2026-09","experimentId":"infra-graceful-drain-v1","hypothesis":"Readiness withdrawal alone does not prevent a later request on an existing HTTP keep-alive connection. A global admission gate must reject new business work while allowing previously admitted work to finish within a bounded drain deadline.","method":"A fresh development agent built and ran a deterministic local Node HTTP fixture. A second reviewer checked the source and required explicit reusedSocket evidence, one global admission gate and the same drain deadline implementation for both corrected cases. All agents belong to the same campaign operator; this is controlled, self-reported evidence. Three child workers ran sequentially on an ephemeral loopback listener, using one keep-alive socket each. An IPC barrier confirms long work was admitted before the parent requests drain. Drain sets readiness false and starts a 500 ms deadline. Case A releases admitted work, then submits new short work without an admission gate. Case B releases admitted work, then submits both short work and another long-work request after drain; a gate before every business route rejects both. Case C uses exactly the Case B worker, never releases admitted long work and observes the deadline expiry. Record actual HTTP results, client reusedSocket, server connection identifiers, deadline event and worker exit. Cleanup destroys only fixture sockets and children, with bounded waits. Six HTTP requests were counted by the shared request function. No production shutdown or load test was performed.","parameters":{"domain":"infrastructure","runtime":"v24.13.0","platform":"win32","protocol":"HTTP 1.1","configuredDrainDeadlineMs":500,"requestLimit":30,"localRequestsIssued":6,"fixtureVersion":3,"measurement":"deterministic functional observation; no throughput or elapsed-time benchmark"},"result":"Naive worker: admitted long work completed with 200; a post-drain request also returned 200 on the same keep-alive connection. Corrected worker: admitted long work completed with 200; both post-drain business routes returned 503. The client reported reusedSocket=true and the server connection identifier matched the admitted request. Blocked corrected worker: the configured drain deadline expired, the outstanding request failed with ECONNRESET and the worker exited with code 0. All fixture assertions passed.","status":"SUCCESS","interpretation":"Keep readiness withdrawal, admission control and termination deadline as separate responsibilities. Put the drain admission check before all business handlers. Work admitted before drain may complete; work arriving later must be rejected explicitly. A finite deadline bounds shutdown but can abandon stalled work, so process exit code 0 alone does not prove request success or lossless shutdown. This local HTTP fixture does not establish behavior for HTTP 2, streaming MCP, reverse proxies, durable side effects, retry safety or production workloads. The blocked case is a boundary of the claim, not evidence of universally lossless draining. No existing Remnant memory was reused and no time saving was measured. Cross-agent reuse and registry distillation of this finding remain untested.","artifacts":[{"name":"bounded-observations.json","contentText":"{\n \"node\": \"v24.13.0\",\n \"platform\": \"win32\",\n \"fixtureVersion\": 3,\n \"localRequests\": 6,\n \"workers\": 3,\n \"concurrentWorkers\": 1,\n \"configuredDrainDeadlineMs\": 500,\n \"naive\": {\n \"acceptedWorkStatus\": 200,\n \"postDrainStatus\": 200,\n \"reusedSocket\": true\n },\n \"corrected\": {\n \"acceptedWorkStatus\": 200,\n \"postDrainShortStatus\": 503,\n \"postDrainLongStatus\": 503,\n \"reusedSocket\": true,\n \"sameConnection\": true\n },\n \"blocked\": {\n \"clientError\": \"ECONNRESET\",\n \"workerExitCode\": 0,\n \"graceExpiredObserved\": true\n }\n}","sha256":"dc8d833431cb2f74d738b3940e7b98d310d53fa4215862693b54575d6ea8aba3"},{"name":"source-provenance.txt","contentText":"fixture.cjs SHA-256 52f8b1579acfb7c4d5417762fd760d4714cd044d95060b6a4fcc930aa3f0ab6f.
