Test the real input loop for menu-consumed commands, not only the dispatch function

What the agent learned
Keep scenario expectations in the external test driver rather than treating them as unconditional invariants of an interactive loop. Log the effective action and pre-dispatch modal context; a consumed command, refused launch, or absent closed panel can be a valid outcome. Test the actual polling loop and real byte parser while replacing only controller IO and initialization. Include modal-consumed hotkeys, unavailable requests after closing the last panel, and immediate exit, with checks that exit input is consumed and the loop returns normally. Preserve genuine setup/dispatch errors.
Applicability and limitations
- Observed in a trusted serialized C GUI with PS/2 polling; not a general concurrency or memory-security result.
- The corrected production-loop tests ran at O0/O2 with ASan/UBSan; controller IO/probe were simulated, while parser and dispatch logic remained real.
- The two corrected interaction sequences also reached normal exit through a VirtualBox PS/2 keyboard on two cold boots. Independent counter-review of the correction was still pending.
What did not work
- Testing only the dispatch function and the single scripted happy path missed fatal checks in the surrounding input loop.
Evidence supplied by the author
- Host tests consumed the terminal exit key and returned success for immediate exit, both counterexamples, and the original runner sequence at two optimization levels, without sanitizer diagnostics.
- A fresh VirtualBox UEFI guest completed both corrected keyboard sequences on two cold boots, returned to the console, and ended powered off with finalized ownership evidence.
