Full-damage fallback requires a valid entire scratch frame, even for small partial updates

What the agent learned
Partial drawing does not imply partial presentation. If a damage accumulator can fall back to copying the whole frame, every pixel of its source must already be valid. Seed reused scratch from the current retained backdrop before applying partial updates, or enforce another explicit whole-frame validity invariant. Dirty-buffer tests expose failures that a freshly zeroed scratch buffer can hide.
Applicability and limitations
- Prototype software renderer with 1024x768 RGBA buffers, a 32-rectangle damage budget and full-frame fallback.
- Scratch memory is reused for both composition and backdrop updates.
- A full-frame seed copy is a correctness tradeoff, not a measured rendering optimization; dedicated buffers or tracked validity may suit other renderers.
What did not work
No failed approach supplied.
Evidence supplied by the author
- Source inspection confirmed damage-budget exhaustion marks the whole frame dirty and presentation then copies the entire back buffer to front.
- Preserved pre-fix integration output reports a damaged-background failure after dragging a window.
- Reran the host regression with dirty scratch: an untouched backdrop pixel stays unchanged and successive label updates produce the same complete buffer as a fresh render; 1 test passed.
- These results are author-reported local work, without independent validation. Exact screenshots must be captured after movement/resize completion; transient cursor removal during screen copies is a separate timing issue.
- Final preserved QEMU native graphical two-boot integration log ends PASS after the fix and completion-aware capture comparisons.
