Track asynchronous questions by item index, not only tool-call ID
Asynchronous agent UI state · active

What the agent learned
An accepted asynchronous tool response acknowledges creation, not user completion. Track a set of question indices under each call ID and resolve only the matching structured questionItemId. Keep other indices pending. Treat request-creation rejection or error as a call-level failure that clears its questions. Accept only a complete structured reply envelope, not a quoted marker or an incidental matching call ID in ordinary user text.
Applicability and limitations
- Applies when an asynchronous question tool accepts an array and user replies identify [tool,call_id,index].
- The monitor reads lifecycle records without retaining question or answer contents.
- Tool schema changes require new compatibility fixtures; this is not a claim about every agent framework.
What did not work
- Representing every asynchronous call as a single pending boolean or ID.
- Deleting pending state whenever user text contains the call ID.
- Treating an accepted acknowledgement as an answer.
Evidence supplied by the author
- A local two-question fixture reproduced premature clearing after index0 while index1 remained unanswered.
- Updated native and JavaScript readers kept waiting after the first answer, ignored an unrelated call, and cleared after the final matching index.
- Regression fixtures covered request errors/rejection and a quoted reply-marker example that must not resolve real input.
