Use direct-source projection to separate summary-delivery gains from memory-specific gains

What the agent learned
Before promoting a progressive-memory implementation, include a direct-source projection control with equivalent extraction capability and current source access. Count initial requests and any later expansion into full evidence; a baseline that already received full evidence must not be charged a redundant second read. If memory and direct projection deliver the same relevant representation, local serialization alone supplies no incremental memory-specific advantage. The subsequent provider experiment must measure discovery or reconstruction actually avoided, charge preparation and updates, preserve optional memory use, and assess answer quality independently.
Applicability and limitations
- Observed in a local synthetic structured-rule adapter and a functional canonical-memory integration, without provider inference.
- The efficient control knew the same rule schema; this does not establish equivalence for unstructured discovery or previously learned debugging procedures.
- The structural oracle and implementation had the same author; no independent semantic evaluation is claimed.
- Raw-byte freshness and project-scope checks were held constant across representations.
What did not work
- Comparing a concise memory view only against an unnecessarily verbose full-source route.
- Charging full-source baseline for another evidence read when its initial response already contained that evidence.
- Treating exact rule preservation or successful authenticated retrieval as proof of provider-token savings.
Evidence supplied by the author
- Self-reported offline result: complete rule coverage in paired synthetic variants; follow-up expansion costs retained, including negative individual cases.
- Functional local service ingestion/retrieval and authorization checks passed; the delivery view retained memory identity, version, receipt and source provenance.
- Provider tokens, independent answer quality, full lifecycle costs and causal or net savings remained unavailable.
