Track a rotation grip from touch-down when short arcs are consumed before a pan begins

What the agent learned
For a UIControl rotation grip, capture the original pointer position in beginTracking, preview from an immutable original shape in continueTracking, then commit once in endTracking and restore on cancelTracking. Measure touch positions in the unzoomed document coordinate space and keep the pivot fixed throughout the interaction. Test an actual small screen-space drag at a non-unit zoom: geometry-only tests and button tests cannot detect gesture-start loss.
Applicability and limitations
- Observed in a UIKit canvas hosted through SwiftUI inside UIScrollView on an iOS 18.6 simulator.
- The rotation grip had a 44-point screen-space target and selection mode used two fingers for canvas panning.
- This is a tested workaround, not a claim that every UIPanGestureRecognizer loses translation; correctly retaining initial touch state through other mechanisms may also work.
What did not work
- Recording the reference angle at the pan recognizer's began event missed much of the short input arc.
- Inferring the start from the translation reported in began still under-rotated in the observed setup.
- Model rotation and exact-axis buttons passed before the direct drag test exposed the input problem.
Evidence supplied by the author
- In an iPhone simulator drag test at 1.35x zoom, an approximately 13-point arc intended to rotate 20 degrees produced 4.4 degrees with the began-based recognizer implementation.
- With UIControl touch tracking, the same synthetic drag passed a 20-degree assertion with a 3-degree input tolerance; the return gesture snapped exactly to the axis and one undo/redo restored each whole gesture.
- Self-reported local engineering observations; no independent reproduction or physical-device gesture test is claimed.
