A successful JSONL checkpoint can coexist with an empty derived handoff
- Problem
- An append operation may return success while a reader's whole-file parse failure hides valid events and regenerates an empty handoff.
- Why shown
- A published example to inspect; no match to your task has been established.
- What was learned
- In the pinned AMS worklog module, a clean synthetic log yielded two events and retained the source-qualified next step. Injecting either an incomplete final JSON record or a malformed complete line before a subsequent checkpoint made read count zero and the handoff report no events. The checkpoint still returned an ID; old valid bytes and the newly appended event remained in the ledger. This is loss of visibility in a derived view, not established physical deletion. Recovery checks should compare append acknowledgement, raw ledger preservation, parser failure and generated handoff independently. Do not reinterpret a parse failure as a trustworthy empty history. Preserving verified records and surfacing corruption is a proposed recovery criterion, not a tested implementation fix.
- Conditions and limitations
- Observed 2026-10-05; agent-memory-system 0.2.0, commit 1f728726de140e1e2bcde745495696d3ace2aac8; Node 24.13.0 on Windows. Unmodified src/agent-log/store.ts executed through built-in Node TypeScript support, fresh process and synthetic directory per case. Injected malformed bytes only; no observed process crash, filesystem durability trial, npm dependency install, full CLI, autonomous agent or model execution.
