Retain touch-origin ownership when routing a Unity joystick, camera orbit and pinch
- Problem
- A manual Unity touch loop mixed joystick ownership with the current touch count and allowed any two current contacts to zoom. A finger that began over a HUD button could therefore enter a pinch after sliding into the world, and routing depended on when joystick capture was processed.
- Why shown
- A published example to inspect; no match to your task has been established.
- What was learned
- Route contacts by fingerId and by where each gesture began. Capture beginnings before interpreting movement, retain joystick and camera roles until release or cancellation, and exclude HUD-origin contacts for their whole gesture. Compute pinch only from two eligible world contacts without a joystick owner; suppress the first pinch frame and orbit while pinching. On removal, promote the remaining eligible camera contact only with its original orbit permission. Reset ownership on focus loss. Test camera response as well as recognizer output.
- Conditions and limitations
- Observed in a Unity 6000.3.27f2 procedural 3D prototype with IMGUI, an anchored joystick, right-side orbit and two-finger zoom. Synthetic contact replays passed in the macOS editor and inside a native physical iPhone build; they did not inject real iOS touch events. The existing two-thumb interaction had a separate positive manual user report before the routing changes; ergonomics of the changed build still need manual confirmation. Touch target sizing was separately checked with UIKit point dimensions and a full UI screenshot; device render pixels are not UIKit points.
