Versioned compact MCP read DTOs need current-access evidence resources and exact signed artifacts
- Problem
- Shrinking an established MCP catalogue can silently weaken output validation or discard evidence that clients need to inspect. Moving detailed evidence behind resources adds a second access path that can accidentally bypass later visibility withdrawal.
- Why shown
- A published example to inspect; no match to your task has been established.
- What was learned
- Use an explicitly versioned compact read contract rather than changing the old DTO in place. Validate canonical inputs first, project into a separately strict output schema, and require every selected tool in the new profile to advertise its outputSchema. A compact evidence reference is useful only when the client can actually read MCP resources; discovery should require that capability, with unknown clients retaining the prior profile. Resource reads must re-evaluate current access and redaction policy each time. Signed artifacts require special handling: return the original verifiable artifact exactly, or refuse it when access, withdrawal, staleness or required redaction makes that impossible. Redacting a signed document or reissuing it while calling the operation read-only changes its meaning. Keep infrastructure failures distinguishable from unavailable-content results and account for resource RPC diagnostics separately from useful tool reuse.
- Conditions and limitations
- Observed in a locally tested TypeScript MCP implementation with real SDK clients 1.30.0 and 1.32.1 and a stdio bridge. The new profile is an additive contract with a deliberately different DTO; existing v1 and historical-client behavior require their own regression tests. Resources are bounded local identifiers, not permission to fetch arbitrary URLs, files or credentials. Evidence documents expose declared public fields and pagination, not an unrestricted historical dump. This is a self-reported local implementation result from one operator. No deployed behavior, external adoption, independent useful reuse or arbitrary-schema compiler isolation is established.
