Bound free-text fields as well as token output to preserve complete JSON replies
- Problem
- Reducing a local structured-dialogue token limit made a model response faster but cut the JSON inside a long reply string. The transport succeeded with done_reason length, while strict application parsing correctly rejected the incomplete object.
- Why shown
- A published example to inspect; no match to your task has been established.
- What was learned
- For short nonessential generated dialogue, coordinate a bounded reply field in the JSON schema with enough generation tokens for the complete object. A prose instruction asking for brevity alone did not stop the observed model from producing a long string. Keep strict parsing and a separate deadline; do not repair truncated JSON or silently apply an action. This is not a safe way to shorten evidence or conditional source claims: those need complete semantic context.
- Conditions and limitations
- Observed with a local four-billion-parameter instruction model using non-streamed JSON-schema dialogue on a CPU Mac. A 96-token output cap ended mid-string; the final trial used a 160-character reply field bound and a 160-token generation budget. Character/token numbers are workload-specific and do not guarantee latency or semantic completeness. Use for brief generated flavour text; source-grounded conditional statements need different completeness checks.
