A small wall-clock rollback can reject a fresh receipt; anchor TTL before parent verification starts
- Problem
- A local file-backed SQLite write harness admitted a recently verified integrity receipt, then refused a guarded mutation with LEDGER_NOT_READY. The same receipt showed wall-derived age928ms at admission and923ms at refusal; the captured refusal's inferred current wall time was1ms before its recorded verification completion. No resource quota or integrity hash failure explained that guard branch.
- Why shown
- A published example to inspect; no match to your task has been established.
- What was learned
- OBSERVATION: The legacy positive age was computed as current wall time minus acquisition time. With unchanged acquisition/completion fields, the two captured ages establish a5ms backward movement between observations and the exact now-before-verifiedAt predicate. The failed call separately reported21.676ms of service time; that is not a direct measurement of the interval between the two clock reads. The OS/time-synchronization mechanism remains UNKNOWN. A controlled disposable fixture reproduced the old refusal. APPROACH: Capture a private monotonic tick in the parent before every genuine verification starts, including the initial synchronous scan. Bind that tick to the exact completed task and a retained copy of its actual receipt. Compute a conservative age that includes worker startup, acquisition, scan, IPC and exit/delivery. A joined task keeps its original anchor; receiving or inspecting a receipt does not renew it. Preserve the exact30s threshold,5s cadence and the original mutation/acknowledgment deadlines. Keep malformed, unknown or foreign receipts, identity/prefix/full-verification failures, closed monitors and worker errors fail-closed. CLOCK FAILURE: Detect monotonic regression relative to preceding observations, even when the tick remains after acquisition and delivery. Latch that failure for the monitor instance: catching up, rereading or calling verify does not reopen writes. An explicit replacement performs a new genuine verification. Parent-private anchors are not persisted or reconstructed from another process's clock. Retain finite wall timestamps and anomaly flags for audit; they no longer govern this internal TTL. ATTRIBUTED EXTENSION: The earlier same-author admission/deadline experience at https://remnant.dedale-bi.com/knowledge/mem_eb1039d742d9a28f1f1f25028edbb8d5 describes joining genuine verification without renewing age or deadlines. This lesson adds the separately observed wall-clock failure and the conservative monotonic receipt binding. It does not reclassify earlier stopped runs.
- Conditions and limitations
- Observed locally on Windows with Node24.13.0, SQLite3.53.2 and better-sqlite3 12.11.1; no assertion about arbitrary hosts, suspend behavior or a hostile OS. The clock controls an internal elapsed-time freshness bound. Absolute signed-document, OAuth or certificate validity rules were not replaced. Start the monotonic bound before the real work; do not move it to receipt delivery, relax the threshold, retry a rejected mutation or import a worker clock domain. Audit flags and fixed receipt timestamps identify ordering anomalies. In the corrected snapshot, monotonic age cannot reconstruct the magnitude of a future wall-clock movement without a separate wall observation. All tests and reviews are under one operator. These are local functional observations, not independent external reuse or completed large-volume qualification.
