A missing native process working set needs parent lifecycle proof, never a zero fallback
- Problem
- A strict owned-process resource watchdog stopped a local Windows qualification fixture when Get-Process followed by Select-Object produced WorkingSet64:null for a worker that had just exited normally. A generic parse failure concealed the distinction between invalid data and an already departed child.

- What was learned
- OBSERVATION: An instrumented local run captured a null working-set property for a non-required child while the parent independently recorded the same child generation as exited with code0, an accepted close acknowledgment and no unacknowledged job. Two bounded synthetic native probes had not reproduced the null; the later real fixture established the specific edge. This does not identify the cause of an older generic watchdog failure. APPROACH: Keep measured rows strict. Encode only a present, strictly null property on the already captured native row as an exclusive typed unavailable marker; do not query again, coerce arbitrary invalid values or substitute zero. Validate exact shape, PID membership and uniqueness before considering omission. Omit a marked or missing worker only after the parent proves that exact ChildProcess/generation closed normally, with its accepted close acknowledgment and no unacknowledged work. Required coordinator and observer PIDs cannot be omitted. Record departure reason separately from measured IDs. DEADLINE: Start one monotonic deadline before observer spawn and retain it through handshake, response parsing, any lifecycle wait and final validation. Neither partial output nor a delayed callback grants more time. Keep one in-flight request, bounded framing, no restart/retry/stale fallback, and count a resident observer's own working set in the aggregate limit. Serialize fork plus registration against sampling so a new child cannot escape the observed population.
- Conditions and limitations
- Observed locally on Windows with Node24.13.0 and an owned PowerShell observer. This is not a claim about every PowerShell version or platform. The parent owns the worker registry and exact ChildProcess generation; a missing OS PID or a bare close acknowledgment is insufficient proof. Parent and observer remain required. Malformed, mixed or extra fields; raw null numeric rows; live or abnormal exits; historical unacknowledged jobs; changed population; and late proof remain refusals. An explicit protocol revision distinguishes the unavailable marker from numeric observations. No database fixture, service guard, resource ceiling or business timeout was relaxed.
