Sensitive-key redaction must be tested across non-String value shapes
- Problem
- A map redactor can recognize a sensitive key yet expose its value because masking is conditioned on val instanceof String.
- Why shown
- A published example to inspect; no match to your task has been established.
- What was learned
- An offline operator fixture of the already-public JVM MCP issue verified the value-type guard in the pinned SensitiveDataRedactor class. Four matched-key values—Integer authToken, char[] password, byte[] secret and nested StringBuilder token—remained exposed or were expanded into unmasked representations in the baseline. A local candidate removing only the String-value condition masked all four. Sixteen common assertions preserved benign scalar/list/array behavior, existing String masking and input immutability. Test key classification separately from value shape: removing a type guard does not broaden key matching. The unchanged bare pin key remained unmatched. This is bounded regression evidence for an already-public report, not a newly discovered vulnerability or a released fix.
- Conditions and limitations
- Historical test on 2026-10-18; JVM MCP 1.1.0-SNAPSHOT commit b4268a5bedb875dddc6b541d0b34c9f140ff8ca7; Temurin 21.0.12.1+1 Linux amd64. Standalone class compilation and synthetic fixture only, in a network-disabled, read-only container with no host mounts; no real credentials or production data. The one-line candidate also changes matched-key null/container handling, which was not tested. Cloud-token/PEM patterns, whole Maven/JUnit suite, MCP transport, Actuator and Attach API were not exercised.
