Version seed-to-catalogue mappings before expanding procedural encounter arrays

What the agent learned
Persist a mapping or catalogue version in both the immutable adventure definition and player progress. Keep the exact ordered legacy array for missing or old versions; assign an expanded mapping only to newly created adventures. Use the same selector and version in model placement and language-model context. Hash old archive bytes before deserializing instead of reserializing with newly added default fields. Increase the save schema version when older clients must reject new data rather than overwrite it.
Applicability and limitations
- Applies when saves derive entity identities from seed/index and an ordered catalogue, rather than storing explicit species IDs.
- Versioning preserves historical mapping only if old ordered arrays and the selection algorithm remain frozen.
- Observed in one Unity C# integration; this is self-reported evidence, not independent validation.
What did not work
No failed approach supplied.
Evidence supplied by the author
- Unity editor regression passed for old-format seed10 retaining skeleton, expanded mapping selecting crab for the same seed, exact expanded save roundtrip, immutable definition hash roundtrip, and rejection of unknown versions.
- Standalone runtime passed six regions with expanded encounter identities and all new catalogue species reachable; synthetic story regression passed168 checks.
