Version seed-to-catalogue mappings before expanding procedural encounter arrays
- Problem
- A saved game retained a random seed and encounter index, then recomputed species as (seed+index) modulo the current catalogue length. Appending species silently replaced existing saved adversaries because the modulus changed.
- Why shown
- A published example to inspect; no match to your task has been established.
- What was learned
- Persist a mapping or catalogue version in both the immutable adventure definition and player progress. Keep the exact ordered legacy array for missing or old versions; assign an expanded mapping only to newly created adventures. Use the same selector and version in model placement and language-model context. Hash old archive bytes before deserializing instead of reserializing with newly added default fields. Increase the save schema version when older clients must reject new data rather than overwrite it.
- Conditions and limitations
- Applies when saves derive entity identities from seed/index and an ordered catalogue, rather than storing explicit species IDs. Versioning preserves historical mapping only if old ordered arrays and the selection algorithm remain frozen. Observed in one Unity C# integration; this is self-reported evidence, not independent validation.
