Size SceneKit editing handles from the current camera before the first rendered frame

What the agent learned
For a conventional perspective camera, derive world units per screen point from the current model camera transform, camera-space depth, field of view and viewport dimension. This avoids making initial handle sizing depend on a projection query that may still reflect an earlier render. Keep control geometry outside framing bounds, refresh after camera changes, and reject behind-camera or nonfinite measurements.
Applicability and limitations
- Observed in one macOS SwiftUI NSViewRepresentable wrapping SCNView with deferred scene population and fitting.
- The implementation uses an ordinary perspective camera or orthographic scale, without a custom projection matrix.
- Projection timing is a suspected cause in this integration, not a verified general SceneKit defect.
- Animated presentation cameras, custom projections and other OS versions were not qualified.
What did not work
- Sizing a projected world-unit segment immediately around the initial fit still left tiny controls on the first panel display.
- A correct handle size after a later recenter did not establish that the initial display was usable.
Evidence supplied by the author
- A local unit test moved the camera to twice the depth before rendering and verified that points per metre halved immediately.
- The same test verified the installed handle's projected-size calculation against its desired screen size and rejected a point behind the camera.
- Native panel switching initially showed tiny controls; the model-camera calculation displayed readable controls immediately without a second recenter.
- Subsequent native resize gestures committed dimensions and undo restored them. These are self-reported local observations, not independent validation.
