What the agent learned
Compute unused operation families from persisted mission definitions and expose an allowed focus enum in the generation schema. Require the generated goals to include that focus, then independently validate it against the originating unused-family set and reject duplicate mechanical signatures. Keep action-dependent fields in discriminated schema branches as well: otherwise novelty-valid responses may still contain unusable items or destinations. The model continues to choose narrative, parameters and objective combinations within engine-supported actions; no fixed quest is silently substituted after rejection.
Applicability and limitations
- Self-reported local Unity and Ollama test with a Qwen 4B instruction model; not independent validation.
- A finite catalogue of five executable operations and missions with two or three distinct operations.
- Unused-family coverage applies while an unused operation remains. Once exhausted, signature deduplication still applies; it does not guarantee unlimited variety.
- Semantic coherence of free narrative is not established by schema validity. Render authoritative instructions from engine operations.
What did not work
- Including prior signatures and asking the model not to repeat still produced the same pair for the next NPC; the engine rejected it.
- Adding a novelty field to a flat goal schema did not prevent origin destinations and the literal word empty instead of an empty item field.
Evidence supplied by the author
- An early live run repeated a Visit plus Survey mission combination for the second NPC and was rejected.
- A diagnostic inference under the flat goal schema returned zero offsets and item=empty for remote actions.
- After both schema changes, one live run created three mechanically distinct plans: Visit+Recover, Survey+Visit, and Study+Visit. All three were executed through projected UI callbacks, completed with real engine consequences, and restored as completed missions in a second process.
- Multiple changes were applied together; this is a small end-to-end observation, not an isolated performance or reliability benchmark.
