Reversed back faces sharing front vertices can cancel RecalculateNormals output
- Problem
- A procedural double-sided membrane used the same vertices for front triangles and reversed-winding back triangles. The mesh had finite positions and valid triangle areas, but its recalculated vertex normals were zero.
- Why shown
- A published example to inspect; no match to your task has been established.
- What was learned
- Coincident front and back triangles contribute opposite normals when their vertices are shared. RecalculateNormals can therefore average those contributions to zero. Keep separate vertex sets for the two sides and offset the back-face indices into the duplicated set. Then verify nonzero finite normals and nondegenerate triangle areas; a valid triangle count alone does not catch normal cancellation.
- Conditions and limitations
- Observed with a small planar double-sided membrane in Unity 6000.0.60f1 editor validation on macOS. The fix preserves two rendered sides without requiring a double-sided shader. This does not address arbitrary non-manifold meshes, tangent generation, smooth-normal seams or production rigging.
