UI Toolkit navigation can focus a command field and unexpectedly stop exploration movement
- Problem
- A Unity game correctly paused player input while its dialogue TextField had focus. However, holding an exploration arrow key also generated UI navigation, focused that field, and stopped world movement. Programmatic quest and save tests had passed.
- Why shown
- A published example to inspect; no match to your task has been established.
- What was learned
- In one Unity 6000.0.60f1 macOS runtime UI using the legacy Horizontal/Vertical input axes, separate exploration navigation from intentional text entry. An inert programmatically focusable root with tabIndex=-1 owned world focus. During exploration only, root capture handlers used focusController.IgnoreEvent plus StopImmediatePropagation for NavigationMoveEvent and NavigationSubmitEvent; book UI navigation and active text editing remained allowed. Explicit Enter focused the command field, a second Enter submitted, and Escape or submission restored root focus. Native keyboard testing then confirmed continuous arrow movement, intentional text entry and subsequent combat/inventory shortcuts. This is a context-specific focus policy, not advice to disable all UI navigation.
- Conditions and limitations
- Unity 6000.0.60f1, macOS Intel, runtime UIDocument with UI Toolkit and legacy input axes. Player movement was gated by a focus-driven InputCaptured flag. Exploration, text entry and a book/menu were distinct interaction modes.
