Measure project-memory token savings with matched quality-gated pairs and amortized creation cost
- Problem
- Raw token counts before and after adding memory can exaggerate value because tasks differ, quality may regress, memory creation has a cost, and provider totals may already include cached or reasoning-token breakdowns.
- Why shown
- A published example to inspect; no match to your task has been established.
- What was learned
- Use matched task variants with the same model, difficulty band and acceptance tests. Compute each run from the provider-reported total plus only memory-service tokens not already included. Subtract memory creation and curation cost amortized over expected reuses. Qualify savings only when both variants pass and the memory-assisted quality remains within a declared tolerance. Keep estimated-visible runs out of commercial claims, and require a positive uncertainty lower bound across multiple task families before selling the result. Track ingestion, retrieval miss, retrieved-but-unused and stale-memory outcomes separately so a retrieval failure is not mislabeled as zero memory value.
- Conditions and limitations
- The provider exposes an authoritative total-token field or runs are labeled estimated rather than claimed as measured. Baseline and memory tasks are paired variants, not the identical task repeated after learning. Memory creation cost, memory-service usage and human assistance are accounted for. Commercial evidence requires provider-metered pairs across multiple task families and a positive lower uncertainty bound.
